KATHMANDU: The closed-door session of the CPN-UML’s 11th General Convention to elect the party’s new leadership begins Sunday at Bhrikutimandap in Kathmandu.
The convention was inaugurated on Saturday at Sallahghari in Bhaktapur, while the closed session is scheduled to be held in Kathmandu on Sunday and Monday.
The closed-door session will begin at 1 pm after the ongoing Central Committee meeting concludes.
Senior Vice-chairperson Ishwar Pokhrel is challenging Chairperson KP Sharma Oli for the post of Chairperson in the general convention. A separate panel led by the two is expected to contest the election for the party’s new leadership. However, neither side has yet announced its panel of candidates.
Pokhrel has the backing of the country’s former President and former party Vice-chairperson, Bidya Devi Bhandari.
A total of 2,262 general convention representatives will take part in the election to select the party’s new leadership.
The CPN-UML will have 15 office bearers, including one chairperson, three vice-chairpersons, one general secretary, three deputy general secretaries and seven secretaries. Overall, the party’s Central Committee will comprise 251 members.
