KATHMANDU: The Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Nepal Police is dispatching Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Dinesh Acharya to Hong Kong to investigate the 60 kg gold smuggling case.
A Home Ministry official confirmed that CIB is dispatching a police officer to Hong Kong to investigate the gold smuggling case.
According to CIB sources, SSP Acharya will engage in discussions with officials in Hong Kong to study how such a huge amount of gold managed to pass through Hong Kong customs. He will also analyze the connection between the gold smuggling agents based there and their counterparts in Nepal with the help of Interpol officials. SSP Acharya will also get the support of the Hong Kong Police for his investigation.
A team mobilized by the Department of Revenue Investigation (DRI) intercepted a taxi transporting 66 boxes of motorcycle brake shoes imported from Hong Kong, immediately after the consignment left the cargo complex of Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in Kathmandu on July 19. According to DRI officials, the boxes concealed gold cleverly molded into the shape of brake shoes.
After melting the gold, Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) verified the gold’s weight at 60.789 kg.
