KATHMANDU: The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) has filed an appeal at the Supreme Court challenging the verdict of the Special Court in the corruption case related to the procurement of two wide-body aircraft by the Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC).
CIAA Spokesperson, Rajendra Kumar Paudel, said they have challenged the Special Court’s decision to wrongly convict only a few individuals while acquitting many others named in the charge sheet at the apex court. The appeal was filed on Tuesday, he added.
The Special Court had acquitted the then tourism minister Jeevan Bahadur Shahi, NAC board directors, and 14 NAC employees, while convicting 11 other defendants.
In the appeal, the CIAA has argued that the Special Court’s verdict was flawed and requested the Supreme Court to overturn the verdict and impose punishment on all those involved.
The CIAA had filed the charge sheet at the Special Court in April 2023. The Special Court delivered its verdict in December last year.
The anti-graft body had named 24 Nepalis, six foreign nationals, and two firms as defendants in the case. It had sought to recover Rs 1.47 billion from the defendants.
