CIAA files graft case against 19 in MDMS procurement scandal

KATHMANDU: The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) has filed a corruption case against 19 individuals, including two former chairpersons of the Nepal Telecommunication Authority (NTA), at the Special Court on charges of irregularities in the procurement of the Mobile Device Management System (MDMS).

Although the constitutional anti-graft body had also taken statements from former ministers Gyanendra Bahadur Karki and Mohan Bahadur Basnet, they have not been charge-sheeted.

According to CIAA Spokesperson Narhari Ghimire, CIAA has sought to recover Rs 919.8 million from the defendants.

NTA’s former Chairpersons – Digambar Jha and Purushottam Khanal, Senior Director Ananda Raj Khanal, Directors Min Prasad Aryal and Dipesh Acharya, and Deputy Directors Binod Chandra Shrestha, Surendra Lal Hada, Rebati Ram Pantha, Sandeep Adhikari, Surya Prasad Lamichhane, Achyutananda Mishra, and Assistant Directors Bijaya Kumar Raya Yadav, Pratiksha Poudel and Nirajan Koirala – have been made defendants in the case.

Likewise, Mohd Noor Amin, Mohammed Shihab Bin Kunih Mohammad, Anuj Singh, Jameel Ahmed and Kabindra Raj Malla of vendor companies Nuemera (M) Sdn Bhd of Malaysia, OSI Consulting Pvt Ltd of India and Namaste Global Communication Pte Ltd of Singapore have also been made defendants in the case. The companies have also been made defendants, according to CIAA.
