KATHMANDU: Church Boys United has lifted the Martyrs Memorial ‘A’ Division League trophy in its debut season, with a game to spare.
In its penultimate match of the league, Church Boys held Three Star Club in a goalless draw at the Dasharath Stadium on Tuesday to earn one point that it needed to become the league champion.
Church Boys has accumulated 45 points from 24 matches. Defending champion Machhindra Club holds the second position with 39 points from 23 games. Machhindra cannot surpass Church Boys in the league table even if it wins the remaining two matches as the top-flight debutants are ahead in head-to-head record.
Of the 25 matches played in the league so far, Church Boys has won 12 matches, while it drew nine matches and lost four matches. Similarly, it scored 32 goals and conceded 15.
Church Boys becomes only the second club in the history of the ‘A’ Division League to claim the title in its debut season, following in the footsteps of Manang Marshyangdi Club. Manang Marshyangdi achieved this feat in 1986 in their first season in the top flight.
Established in 2009, Church Boys earned a promotion to the ‘C’ Division league in 2020. It won the ‘C’ Division title in its inaugural participation and subsequently secured a spot in the ‘B’ Division. In 2021, it lifted the ‘B’ Division league title and got promoted to the ‘A’ Division.
