KATHMANDU: A writ petition has been filed with the Supreme Court challenging the decision to grant amnesty to Yograj Dhakal, also known as Regal Dhakal, who was serving life sentence for the murder of Chetan Manandhar.
President Ram Chandra Poudel pardoned Dhakal, a leader of Nepal Tarun Dal – the youth wing of Nepali Congress (NC), on the occasion of Constitution Day on September 20 at the recommendation of the Council of Ministers.
Chetan’s wife, Bharati, filed the petition on Tuesday, opposing the presidential pardon extended to a person convicted of the murder of her husband.
Chetan was murdered in broad daylight at Dhamboji Chowk, Nepalgunj, in 2015. The District Court of Banke handed down a life imprisonment sentence to Dhakal and jail terms ranging from 3 to 10 years for 12 others involved in the murder in April 2018.
