CAN announces squad for Women’s T20 World Cup Asia Qualifier

KATHMANDU: Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) has announced a 14-member squad for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Asia Qualifier, with Indu Barma as the captain. U-19 captain Puja Mahato has been appointed as vice-captain.

The qualifiers will take place in Thailand from May 9 to 20.

A total of nine teams will compete in the Asia qualifier. Nepal is placed in Group C alongside Bahrain and Hong Kong. Similarly, Group A includes Bhutan, Kuwait and hosts Thailand, while Group B comprises Malaysia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

Each team will play the other teams in its group twice during the league stage. Nepal will face Hong Kong on May 9 and 13, and Bahrain on May 10 and 12.

According to the tournament format, the top team from each group will advance to the Final Round. There, they will play each other once, and the top two teams will qualify for the Global Qualifier.

The Global Qualifier will feature 10 teams – two each from Asia, Europe and Africa qualifiers, and one each from the Americas and East Asia-Pacific qualifiers. Scotland and Bangladesh have secured automatic qualifications for the Global Qualifier. Similarly, the USA has already qualified for the Global Qualifier by winning the Americas Qualifier.

Indu Barma (Captain), Puja Mahato (Vice-Captain), Rubina Chhetri, Kabita Kunwar, Bindu Rawal, Roma Thapa, Rubi Poddar, Sabnam Rai, Kabita Joshi, Ishwari Bist, Samjhana Khadka, Manisha Upadhyay, Rajmati Airee, and Riya Sharma.
