Cabinet discusses Balen’s decision to stop garbage collection from Singhadurbar

KATHMANDU: The meeting of the Council of Ministers held on Tuesday decided to take Kathmandu Mayor Balen Shah’s decision of stopping garbage collection from Singhadurbar premises seriously and take appropriate initiatives to resolve the matter.

Since waste management comes under the jurisdiction of the local government, the government has decided to take up the matter with the local government. “If the issue is not resolved through talks, the government will draw the attention of the Kathmandu Metropolitan City on Mayor Shah’s statement,”  government spokesperson and Minister for Communication and Information Technology, Rekha Sharma, said after the meeting.

Citing the non-cooperation of the federal government, Mayor Shah took to social media recently and said that KMC won’t collect garbage from Singhadurbar premises. Shah reportedly instructed Paribartan Sewa, which has been assigned the responsibility of collecting garbage by the Ministry of Urban Development, to stop collecting garbage form Singhadurbar premises.

“Since waste management comes under the jurisdiction of the local government, KMC cannot escape from its responsibility,” Sharma added.

Meanwhile, the cabinet also decided to fix the limit for pesticide residue in imported and locally produced food products.
