By-polls in Tanahun, Bara also on April 23

KATHMANDU: The Election Commission has announced that by-elections will be held on April 23 for the vacant House of Representatives seats in Bara and Chitwan.

This decision means that all three vacant seats of the House of Representatives will have by-elections on the same day, as the commission had previously announced the by-election for the Chitwan-2 constituency on April 23.

“We have decided to hold by-elections for all three vacant seats – Chitwan-2, Bara-2, and Tanahun-1 – on April 23,” said Chief Election Officer Dinesh Kumar Thapaliya.

The Chitwan-2 seat became vacant after the Supreme Court ruled that Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) President Rabi Lamichhane was unfit to continue as a member of the House of Representatives for not reinstating his citizenship certificate, which had become invalid after he became a US citizen.

Similarly, the Tanahun-1 constituency became vacant after sitting lawmaker Ram Chandra Poudel of the Nepali Congress was elected President, while the Bara-2 constituency became vacant following the election of sitting lawmaker Ramsahaya Prasad Yadav to the post of Vice President.
