KATHMANDU: Out of 410 candidates who filed nominations for the local level by-election, 31 have withdrawn their candidacy.
The Election Commission (EC) had given candidates until 1 pm on Wednesday to withdraw their nominations. The EC published the final list of candidates on Wednesday evening.
According to the EC, 410 candidates – 289 from political parties and 121 independent candidates – had filed their nominations for 44 vacant positions.
Tek Raj Bhattarai and Tika Kumari Chaudhary of Nepali Congress (NC) have been elected unopposed as the Chief of the District Coordination Committee (DCC) of Okhaldhunga and Kailali, respectively. Similarly, Jagat Gharti of CPN (Maoist Center) was also elected unopposed Chairperson of Ward-2 of Putha Uttarganga Rural Municipality of Rukum East.
The EC has provided election symbols to 376 candidates from 20 political parties and independent candidates for the vacant 41 positions.
Out of 25 political parties registered for the local level by-elections, five parties – Hamro Nepal Party, Nepal Communist Party (Marxist-Leninist), Nepali Congress (BP), Nepali Janata Dal, and Aam Janata Party – have not fielded candidates for any positions, according to the EC.
Voting will take place from 7 am to 5 pm on December 1. As per the election program published by the EC, candidates can campaign until midnight on November 28.
