BRI implementation only on consensus basis: FM Rana

KATHMANDU: Minister for Foreign Affairs, Arzu Rana Deuba, has said that the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) will be implemented with the consensus of all parties involved.

Talking to journalists at the Tribhuvan International Airport upon her return from China on Saturday, Rana said discussions on BRI implementation were ongoing. “Nepal signed the BRI framework agreement back in 2017. Currently, discussions about its implementation plan are ongoing. This will be implemented based on mutual understanding between Nepal and China, and with the broader consensus of all stakeholders in Nepal,” Rana added.

She added that since Nepal is not currently in a position to take loans, discussions with the Chinese government have centered on grant-based projects. “The Nepali Congress has formally decided to implement only grant-based projects under BRI. Our coalition partner, CPN-UML, is aware of this,” she added.

Rana also said high-level exchanges between Nepal and China have played a crucial role in strengthening and expanding people-to-people connections. She described her visit as a continuation of these diplomatic efforts.

She also shared that her meeting with her counterpart Wang Yi on Friday focused on various bilateral interests and the upcoming visit of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli to China.
