Bechan Jha sent to judicial remand

KATHMANDU: The Kathmandu District Court has sent Bechan Jha, who was in police custody for investigation into the Bhutanese refugee scam, into judicial remand.

A single bench of District Judge Tirtha Raj KC rejected Jha’s bail plea on Sunday.

Jha has been accused of working hand in glove with high-ranking government officials, ministers, and political leaders to send Nepali citizens to the US as Bhutanese refugees by collecting large sums of money from them. Former Deputy Prime Minister Top Bahadur Rayamajhi is also in judicial remand, while former Home Minister Bal Krishna Jha has been released on bail of Rs 3 million.

Jha was arrested from the Nepal-India border area in far-western Nepal on June 28.

The Supreme Court earlier dismissed a habeas corpus petition seeking his release.

Senior Advocate Krishna Prasad Sapkota and Mahadev Yadav, along with Advocates Purushottam Aryal and Maniram Upadhyay, pleaded for Jha during the hearing on Friday.
