
KATHMANDU: Additional Inspector General (AIG) Basanta Bahadur Kunwar has been appointed as the Inspector General of Nepal Police.
A cabinet meeting held on Friday took the decision to this end.
Kunwar, who joined the police service as Police Inspector on March 19, 1995, will succeed Inspector General (IG) Dhiraj Pratap Singh whose term is ending on Friday midnight. Kunwar will assume office on Saturday.
Four other AIGs – Tek Prasad Rai, Deepak Thapa, Shyamlal Gyawali and Kiran Bajracharya – were also in the race to become the country’s top cop. All five were promoted to AIG on Monday. Kunwar was at the top of the promotion ranking.
Along with IG Singh, three AIGs Sahakul Thapa, Uttam Raj Subedi and Dibesh Lohani are also completing their term from Friday midnight. This means, four posts of AIGs will remain vacant.
The government will pick four among DIGs Sudip Giri, Sandip Bhandari, Tek Tamang, Umesh Raj Joshi, Meera Chaudhary, Ramdutta Joshi, Bhim Prasad Dhakal, Durga Singh Posh Raj Pokharel and Kiran Rana.
