KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has stepped down after weeks of deadly protest, Bangladeshi daily Prothom Alo reported in its online edition on Monday.
“A military helicopter took off from Ganabhaban with Sheikh Hasina at 2:30 on Monday. At that time, his younger sister Sheikh Rehana was with him. Sources said that they left for West Bengal in India by helicopter,” the daily reported.
At least 95 people, including at least 14 police officers, died in clashes in the capital on Sunday, according to local media. The demonstrations began with students seeking scrapping of a quota system for government jobs.
Thousands of protesters have entered Ganabhawan, the official residence of Sheikh Hasina, according to local media.
