Balen’s first cabinet decides to implement Karki commission’s recommendations

KATHMANDU: The first meeting of Prime Minister Balendra Shah’s cabinet has decided to implement recommendations from a high-level commission formed to probe the incidents on September 8 and 9 last year.

According to government spokesperson Sashmit Pokharel, the cabinet took four decisions, including implementing the high-level commission’s report. “Concerning the individuals and bodies recommended by the commission, a study committee will be formed in the case of the security mechanism, and actions will be taken in accordance with the recommendations submitted by that committee,” Pokharel said. “In other cases, the commission will be implemented immediately.”

The commission, led by former Judge Gauri Bahadur Karki, had decided to pursue a criminal case against then Prime Minister KP Shara Oli, then Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak, and then Inspector General of Nepal Police Chandra Kuber Khapung.

The meeting also decided to pay tribute to all known and unknown martyrs of the Gen Z movement of September 8 and 9, 2025, designate Minister for Education, Science and Technology Sushmit Pokharel as the government spokesperson, and approve the government’s 100-point agenda for governance reform.
