Avoid unnecessary travel for next two days: NDRRMA This Zoom Earth screen grab shows weather forecast for 9 am on Saturday.

KATHMANDU: The government has urged the public to avoid leaving their homes for the next two days unless necessary.

“Since weather forecasts indicate a possibility of heavy rainfall, snowfall, and strong winds in various parts of the country on Friday and Saturday, we urge everyone to avoid unnecessary travel, keep doors and windows securely closed during strong winds, turn off fire sources, stop vehicles and stay in safe places if already on the road, remain calm in crowded areas, and move slowly to safer locations without panic,” the National Disaster Risk Reducation and Management Authority (NDRRMA) said in a notice on Thursday.

The NDRRMA has also advised people not to take shelter under weak structures, tall trees, telephone or electricity poles, and wires during storms. Likewise, it has warned people not to touch fallen electrical wires, avoid using electrical appliances, and stay away from high-risk areas.

According to the Meteorological Forecasting Division under the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, most parts of the country will see generally cloudy conditions on Friday afternoon. There is a likelihood of thunderstorms and lightning in many places of Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces, as well as in some areas of the hilly and mountainous regions of Gandaki, Lumbini, and Koshi provinces, and a few places elsewhere.

Many places in Karnali, Sudurpaschim, and Gandaki provinces, and some places in other provinces, are likely to see thunderstorms, lightning, hail, and moderate rain or snowfall on Friday night.

Similarly, there is a chance of thunderstorms, lightning, hail, and moderate rain or snowfall in some areas of Koshi and Bagmati provinces, particularly in the hilly and mountainous regions, on Saturday afternoon.
