KATHMANDU: Nepali women’s kabaddi team has advanced to the semifinals of the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China. This achievement guarantees Nepal at least a bronze medal in the Asian Games.
Iran defeated Bangladesh with a score of 54-16 in Hangzhou on Wednesday. Bangladesh’s defeat secured Nepal’s spot in the semifinals as the first runner-up in Group ‘B’ behind Iran. Nepal and Bangladesh faced defeats against Iran during the group stage. But Nepal defeated Bangladesh 37-24 in the group stage.
This is Nepal’s first participation in women’s kabaddi at the Asian Games.
“We are thrilled to have won a medal in our debut appearance at the Asian Games,” said Bishnu Dutta Bhatta, the coach of the Nepali women’s kabaddi team, in an interview with the news agency RSS from Hangzhou. “We are prepared to put up a strong fight in the semifinals.”
Iran clinched the gold medal in women’s kabaddi in the 18th Asian Games.
Nepal will now meet the winner of Group ‘A’, which consists of India, Thailand, Chinese Taipei, and South Korea, in the semifinal. India leads the Group ‘A’ standings, with Chinese Taipei in the second position.
