Air India flight with 242 passengers crashes in Ahmedabad

KATHMANDU: An Air India Boeing 787 aircraft, en route to London from Ahmedabad, crashed into a residential area in Ahmedabad shortly after taking off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on Thursday afternoon.

According to The Hindu, the plane, carrying 242 passengers, went down in the Meghaninagar area near the airport. “The plane caught fire after crashing, and fire tenders were rushed to the spot to douse the blaze,” fire officer Jayesh Khadia told the Indian daily.

Videos shared on social media showed thick plumes of smoke billowing from the crash site.

Air India has confirmed the crash. “Flight AI171, operating Ahmedabad-London Gatwick, was involved in an incident today, 12 June 2025. At this moment, we are ascertaining the details and will share further updates at the earliest,” the carrier wrote in a social media post.
