KATHMANDU: Nepal Police has established a separate AI and Advanced Analytics Cell (AI Cell) to address challenges arising from the misuse of digital technology.
The police set up the cell to monitor and manage misleading messages and content posted on social media.
Minister for Home Affairs Om Prakash Aryal inaugurated the cell amid a ceremony at the Nepal Police Headquarters in Naxal on Monday.
Speaking on the occasion, Aryal urged Nepal Police officials to regulate false, misleading, and fabricated election-related information and strictly enforce the election code of conduct. He expressed confidence that the AI Cell would help control unwanted activities carried out through social media platforms.
Home Secretary Raj Kumar Shrestha, ministry spokesperson Anand Kafle, and the chiefs of Nepal Police and the Armed Police Force Nepal were also present on the occasion.
Nepal Police officials say a technology-friendly mechanism has been developed to monitor undesirable activities conducted through digital platforms and to seek legal remedies. The AI Cell was established to help mitigate potential risks in the future and make Nepal Police more technology-driven in managing security, they say.
Police say the cell will analyze trends using data collected from CCTV cameras installed in sensitive and important areas.
