Agri minister Ramnath Adhikari resigns

KATHMANDU: Minister for Agriculture and Livestock Development Ramnath Adhikari has resigned from his position.

The decision comes amid mounting pressure on the ruling coalition partner, Nepali Congress (NC), to quit the government after the killing of 19 youths during the demonstration of Gen Z protesters in Kathmandu and different parts of the country on Monday.

Adhikari is an NC lawmaker from Dhading.

On Monday evening, Minister for Home Affairs Ramesh Lekhak, also an NC lawmaker, stepped down, taking moral responsibility for the killings.

“It was unbearable for me to remain in power without seeking an answer to this. After the killing and repression of innocent children which left the nation mourning, my conscience and the values instilled by my party warned me that staying in office would violate my ethics and the teachings I have received. Out of moral responsibility to the nation and its people, and to express my objection to the government’s undemocratic actions, I hereby resign from my ministerial post and offer my apology to the country and its citizens, Adhikari wrote in a social media post on Tuesday morning.
