KATHMANDU: The Embassy of Bangladesh in Kathmandu observed the country’s National Revolution and Solidarity Day on Saturday, commemorating the events of November 7, 1975, and their significance in Bangladesh’s political history.

According to the embassy, the program began with the hoisting of the Bangladeshi national flag at the embassy premises in the presence of members of the Bangladeshi community.

A ceremony was subsequently held at the embassy auditorium, where the national anthems of Bangladesh and Nepal were played. Messages from the president and prime minister of Bangladesh marking the occasion were also read out.

During the discussion session, the speakers reflected on the historical significance of November 7 and its contribution to the nation-building process and the political history of Bangladesh. They recalled the role of President Ziaur Rahman in restoring multiparty democracy, freedom of expression and the press and highlighted his critical role in preserving national unity, sovereignty and people’s collective aspirations in safeguarding the country’s independence and democratic journey.

In his closing remarks, Ambassador Shafiqur Rahman underlined the importance and relevance of November 7 for Bangladesh. Describing the event as a turning point in the country’s political history, he recalled that President Ziaur Rahman, Bir Uttam, the Proclaimer of Independence, was freed from captivity by fellow soldiers and the masses on the day, and later he was entrusted with the responsibility of steering the nation out of a profound crisis. “The emergence of President Ziaur Rahman as the national leader led to the restoration and protection of the country’s independence and sovereignty and the establishment of the rule of law,” he added.

The program included special prayers for the salvation of martyrs and the continued peace and prosperity of Bangladesh. Two documentaries highlighting the historical background and significance of the day were also screened.

Former Nepali ambassadors to Bangladesh, faculty members of the University of Dhaka, members of the Nepali business community, representatives of SAARC and ICIMOD, other organizations and members of the Bangladeshi community living in Nepal participated in the program, according to the embassy.
