Brazil provides DNA testing kits to NDRRMA

KATHMANDU: The Brazilian government has provided DNA testing kits to Nepal to help identify the remains of people who died in disasters but could not be identified.

José Mário Ferreira Filho, deputy chief of mission at the Embassy of Brazil in Kathmandu, handed over the kits to Dr Dharma Raj Uprety, executive chief of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), on Monday.

The kits are expected to assist authorities in identifying unidentified bodies through DNA testing, helping establish the identities of disaster victims, the NDRRMA said in a social media post.

The August 26 Bhotkoshi floods claimed over 1,450 lives, while more than 5,000 are unaccounted for.
