Consensus eludes UML’s Standing Committee over nominations in vacant positions

KATHMANDU: Consensus eluded the Standing Committee of the CPN-UML on Friday over nominations to vacant positions in the party’s Central Committee, Politburo and Standing Committee.

One of the agendas of the meeting, held at the party’s central office in Chyasal, was to fill vacant positions in the party. Although several names were discussed for the vacant positions, the meeting failed to reach an agreement.

The party has called another meeting for Saturday.

Speaking after the meeting, UML Secretary Padma Aryal said Standing Committee members had put forward their suggestions on the nominations.

Aryal said Senior Leader Bidya Devi Bhandari said in the meeting that political parties that fought for the establishment of democracy had a primary responsibility to protect democracy and the constitution amid growing threats to both in the country.

“Bhandari also said she had returned to active party life to help strengthen democracy and the republic and contribute to the party,” Aryal added.
