KATHMANDU: The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DoHM) has said that rain is likely to continue in Nepal until Friday.
The latest bulletin of the DoHM states that weather conditions are expected to gradually improve from Saturday.
Kathmandu is experiencing torrential rain accompanied by strong winds since Wednesday morning.
As this is the rice-harvesting season, the DoHM has advised farmers to check the latest weather information before carrying out agricultural activities.
The DoHM said moderate rainfall occurred at many places in Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini, Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces over the past 24 hours. Heavy rainfall was recorded at one or two places in Gandaki and Sudurpaschim provinces, it added.
Rainfall is expected to be more widespread in the country’s hilly and mountainous areas throughout Wednesday. Rain is also likely in Madhes and Koshi provinces and the Tarai areas. Light to moderate rain is forecast in the hilly and Tarai areas of Sudurpaschim, Karnali, Lumbini, Gandaki and Bagmati provinces, as well as the hilly areas of Koshi Province.
One or two locations in some of these provinces could receive heavy rainfall, Lamichhane said.
Rainfall will be somewhat lower on Thursday compared with Wednesday. Although one or two places in the eastern hills could receive heavy rain, rainfall is expected to decrease in western and Tarai areas, according to the DoHM’s forecast.
Heavy rainfall is likely in the eastern region and Sudurpaschim on Criday, while other areas will receive light to moderate rain. The Tarai areas of Lumbini, Gandaki and Bagmati provinces are not expected to receive significant rainfall on Friday.
The DoHM has issued a yellow alert for Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini, Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces.
A yellow alert is issued when the latest weather information indicates that preparedness and precautionary measures are necessary.
“As this is the rice-harvesting season, people should carry out agricultural activities only after carefully checking weather information. Since rain is likely over the next three days, special caution is necessary,” Lamichhane said.
