KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) has said that candidates contesting the party’s 15th General Convention will not be allowed to participate in the provincial and district conventions.
Raju Katuwal, secretary of the Central Election Committee, said party members contesting the central general convention cannot run for positions at the provincial or district levels.
“The Nepali Congress Statute stipulates that a person who contests an election at any level of the party cannot, during the same period, become a candidate for an executive committee position at any level above or below that level,” he said.
The NC is preparing to elect new leadership at its 15th General Convention but has yet to hold its district and provincial conventions. Although the party has held ward-level and provincial and House of Representatives constituency-level conventions, it has yet to hold the two major lower-level conventions at the district and provincial levels.
“Therefore, it is hereby reiterated that anyone who becomes a candidate for any post at the upcoming 15th General Convention will not be eligible to become a candidate for the provincial or district executive committees to be elected thereafter,” Katuwal said in a statement.
He also clarified that the party statute bars ex-officio general convention representatives and ex-officio representatives from the party’s sister organizations and organizations affiliated with or supporting the NC from contesting for positions on the Central Working Committee at the general convention.
