KATHMANDU: The death toll from an avalanche on Himlung Himal in Manang has risen to seven after rescue workers recovered three more bodies on Wednesday.
Rescue workers on the day recovered the bodies of Ash Gurung, Suraj Rai and Kalam Budha, according to the Nepal National Mountain Guides Association (NNMGA), which is coordinating the operation.
Two bodies each were recovered from the mountain on Monday and Sunday. Rescue workers had recovered the bodies of Birendra Gurung and Ghanshyam Rai on Monday, while the bodies of Chhebi Bhote and Pasang Bhote were recovered on Sunday.
The search and rescue operation is continuing in the affected area. According to NNMGA, IFMGA mountain guides Pasang Kaji Sherpa and Bikram Karki are leading the operation with the support of five experienced climbing guides.
The avalanche struck a group of 22 people comprising eight climbing guides and 14 kitchen staff on Sunday morning.
Himlung Himal (7,126 meters) lies in the Nar-Phu region of Manang district. Since the mountain does not have high rocky walls, it is popular among climbers planning to climb taller peaks.
