KATHMANDU: Japan has provided a $1 million emergency grant to the International Organization for Migration to support the Nepal government-led humanitarian response to the flash floods and debris flows of August 26.
The grant will enable IOM to provide emergency shelter assistance and essential household items to vulnerable households affected by the disaster in Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading, according to a joint statement issued by the Embassy of Japan in Kathmandu and IOM Nepal.
The assistance will target priority locations identified in coordination with government authorities and humanitarian partners. It aims to help affected families meet immediate needs and restore basic living conditions following the disaster.
“Japan is pleased to provide emergency assistance to support the people affected by the recent floods in Nepal,” Japanese Ambassador to Nepal MAEDA Toru said. “Through this contribution, we hope to help vulnerable households meet their immediate needs by providing essential shelter assistance and non-food items, while supporting their efforts to restore basic living conditions.”
IOM has deployed teams to the affected areas to assess needs and coordinate assistance with national and local authorities, humanitarian clusters and other partners, including civil society organizations.
The agency said it will also strengthen mechanisms that allow affected people to raise complaints and provide feedback on the assistance they receive.
“Japan’s generous contribution comes at a critical time for the people of Nepal, who have lost their homes, essential belongings, and loved ones to the devastating floods,” IOM Chief of Mission in Nepal Helene Fors said.
The assistance will support the government’s efforts to provide shelter and household items to people affected by the floods, she added.
