Govt, Garima’s family sign three-point agreement

KATHMANDU: The government and the family of three-year-old Garima Chaudhary of Jitpur Simara Sub-Metropolitan City-1, Bara, have reached a three-point agreement.

The agreement was reached during a discussion between Minister for Health Affairs Sudhan Gurung and Garima’s family at the Ministry of Home Affairs on Saturday evening. Other high-ranking government officials were also present in the meeting.

The meeting decided to form a committee to review the existing legal provisions concerning offenses and punishments for heinous crimes in line with public expectations and submit a report, along with recommendations for drafting new legislation, within seven days. The Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs will form the seven-member committee.

It has also been agreed that the Ministry of Infrastructure Development would take the initiative, in coordination with the local government, to construct a statue of Garima as per the wishes of her family.

The agreement was signed on behalf of the government by Home Minister Gurung, Minister for Infrastructure Development Sunil Lamsal, Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Sabita Gautam, Minister for Women, Children, Gender and Sexual Minorities and Social Security Sita Badi, and Minister for Agriculture, Forest and Environment Gita Chaudhary.

Garima’s father Manoj Kumar Chaudhary and mother Minmati Chaudhary signed the agreement on behalf of the victim’s family.

The three-year-old was murdered after rape last week. Police have arrested two on suspicion of involvement in the crime. One of them have confessed to committing the crime.
