Jajarkot landslide death toll rises to three

KATHMANDU: The death toll from a landslide in Jajarkot has reached three.

​According to the Armed Police Force (APF) Nepal, three people have died in a landslide with mudflow triggered by incessant rainfall in the Risang area of Bheri Municipality-2 in Jajarkot district.

​Search efforts are underway for two others who remain missing, it added.

​The landslide, which occurred at around 5:30 pm on Saturday, injured seven people: 62-year-old Ram Bahadur Shahi, 45-year-old Siddhi Bahadur Kami, 58-year-old Kamala Karki, 23-year-old Anita Karki, 10-year-old Yunis Shahi, 45-year-old Suntali Chadara, and 61-year-old Bhadrakala Karki.

​Among the injured, Ram Bahadur Shahi and Bhadrakala Karki, who were in critical condition, have been referred to Nepalgunj and Surkhet for further treatment.

​Kedar Karki, 52, of Saldhara in Bheri Municipality-2, died while undergoing treatment at Nepalgunj Medical College in Kohalpur, the hospital said. He had been referred to Nepalgunj after receiving initial treatment at Jajarkot District Hospital.

​The bodies of two of the four people initially reported missing—54-year-old Uma Singh Khatri and 83-year-old Rati Khatri, both from the area—were recovered during the search.

​The two people still missing are 70-year-old Bhim Bahadur Karki of Chisapani in Bheri Municipality-2 and 14-year-old Haris B.K. of Gairigaun in the same municipality. Haris went missing after leaving his home following the landslide.

​The landslide also damaged eight houses in the area.
