KATHMANDU: Prof Dr Bibek Baral has been appointed as the Vice Chancellor of Kathmandu University.
Prime Minister and Chancellor of the university Balendra Shah appointed Baral based on the recommendation of the Vice Chancellor Selection and Recommendation Committee, according to a statement issued by Government Spokesperson and Minister for Education and Sports Sashmit Pokharel.
Pokharel handed over the appointment letter to Baral amid a ceremony at the Ministry of Education and Sports on Friday.
The KU Senate meeting held on June 2 had formed the selection and recommendation committee under Minister Pokharel. National Planning Commission (NPC) Member Reshu Aryal Dhungana and KU’s Founding Vice Chancellor Suresh Raj Sharma were the other members of the committee. The committee had forwarded three names – Baral, Rajendra Joshi and Bal Chandra Luitel for the position – to the Office of the Prime Minister.
According to the statement, Baral is a professor at KU’s Department of Mechanical Engineering. He is the first person to have studied at Kathmandu University and later become its vice chancellor.
