KATHMANDU: The government has decided to offer a mourning guard of honor to senior litterateur Rajendra Bimal who passed away on Monday night.
“In recognition of his unparalleled contribution to the fields of language, culture and literature, Minister Ganesh Paudel will attend his funeral to pay tribute,” the letter sent by the ministry’s Administration Division to the District Administration Office, Dhanusha, on Tuesday, read.
The ministry has also requested that necessary arrangements be made to honor him on behalf of the Government of Nepal with a mourning guard of honor.
Bimal was the patron of the Dr Rajendra Bimal Foundation, a cultural activist and a distinguished figure in Maithili and Nepali literature. He was known as an idealistic realist and humanist writer.
Born on March 26, 1947, in Devichowk, Janakpur, Bimal had been teaching Nepali at Tribhuvan University since 1972.
He also contributed to educating Maithili-speaking students in the Mithila region in Nepali and enriched Nepali literature by writing numerous books and other works in the Nepali language.
Bimal was a prominent writer in the contemporary Nepali literary tradition. He completed master’s-level studies in Nepali, Hindi and Maithili literature and earned a doctorate in linguistics.
He entered the literary world by publishing stories like “Lamkhutte” and “Udus” in the magazine *Aryavrat*. His published story collections include *Rajendra Bimalka Kathaharu* (2005) and *Samayka Aankha* (2012).
Bimal wrote stories in both Nepali and Maithili. His works envisioned a society in which regional, ethnic and class-based discrimination could be eliminated and social justice achieved. He opposed war and advocated for peace through his writing.
