Pur Bahadur’s body brought to Kathmandu

KATHMANDU: The body of Nepali mountaineer Pur Bahadur Gurung, who died in an avalanche on Broad Peak in Pakistan, was brought to Kathmandu on Thursday.

Family members, well-wishers and fellow climbers gathered at Tribhuvan International Airport to pay their final respects to Gurung. A funeral procession then took Gurung’s body to the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) headquarters in Naxal.

Gurung’s last rites will be performed on Friday.

Ten people, including six Nepali climbers, were killed in the avalanche. Along with Gurung, the Nepali victims included record-setting mountaineer Nirmal Purja, Kili Pemba Sherpa, Nima Sherpa, Nawang Thindu Sherpa and Gyalu Sherpa

According to NMA, Purja’s funeral will be organized in the United Kingdom, where his family lives. It added that the bodies of the other Nepali climbers will be brought to Nepal after the necessary procedures are completed in Pakistan.
