KATHMANDU: A high-level committee formed by the Ministry of Home Affairs to investigate the death of Ganesh Yadav during protests in Golbazar, Siraha, last week has begun its work.
The team led by Joint Secretary Pushparaj Shahi visited Golbazar on Tuesday to inspect the incident scene, collect facts and evidence, and meet with representatives of concerned agencies, said Kul Shekhar Aryal, member secretary of the committee.
Aryal said the team held an all-party meeting chaired by Golbazar Municipality Mayor Shyam Kumar Shrestha to collect information from representatives of various political parties about the incident.
The committee also met local business owners under the leadership of Golbazar Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Bijay Sah to discuss the damage caused during the protests, the background of the unrest and concerns raised by the business community.
In a separate meeting with representatives of the Muslim community, the team discussed measures to preserve social harmony.
“The investigation is primarily focused on how the incident that began in Dewanganj of Sunsari spread to Golbazar, why the situation escalated to the point where police opened fire during the protest, and how Ganesh Yadav died,” Aryal said.
He said the committee’s top priority is to establish the facts surrounding the shooting and examine the full background of the incident before submitting its report to the Ministry of Home Affairs.
According to Aryal, the local administration is collecting details of damage to shops, buildings and other property caused during the protests.
