Private sector bodies appeal for social harmony amid unrest in Tarai

KATHMANDU: Three leading umbrella organisations of the Nepali private sector have appealed for restraint and dialogue, warning that the recent unrest in parts of the Tarai could undermine social harmony, disrupt economic activity and further weaken the country’s fragile economy.

Issuing separate statements, the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI), Nepal Chambers of Commerce (NCC) and Confederation of Nepalese Industries (CNI) have urged all stakeholders to exercise restraint, reject violence and work towards resolving disputes through peaceful dialogue.

FNCCI Acting President Sur Krishna Baidya said in the statement that Nepal has long stood as an example of unity despite its ethnic, linguistic, religious and cultural diversity. “The Tarai-Madhesh region has always stood as a symbol of coexistence among different communities. Social unrest, clashes, violence and confrontation under any pretext serve no one’s interest,” he said in the statement.

Baidya warned that the ongoing incidents would not only disrupt social harmony but also seriously affect the daily lives of ordinary people, industry, trade and the overall economy.

“Social harmony and peace are prerequisites for prosperity and economic development. Any differences or misunderstandings can only be resolved through peaceful dialogue, negotiations and mutual understanding,” he said.

The NCC has also expressed deep concern over the recent incidents in different parts of the Tarai. It urged people to avoid rumours, misinformation and violence. “No disagreement should take precedence over human life, social harmony and national unity,” it said, appreciating the efforts of the government, local administrations, security agencies, elected representatives, opposition parties and community leaders to restore peace and normalcy.

The CNI echoed similar concerns. Stating that Nepal has maintained religious tolerance, social harmony and national unity for centuries, it urged all sides to preserve that legacy.

Recalling that disputes have historically been resolved through dialogue rather than confrontation, CNI said violence and clashes will not offer lasting solutions. It urged all concerned to maintain restraint, uphold peace and protect social and religious harmony.

CNI called on the government and relevant authorities to ensure the safety of citizens and businesses. It also urged its provincial and district chapters, along with other private sector organisations, to organise activities such as harmony rallies in coordination with civil society groups to promote peace and communal harmony.
