Special mechanism being established for inspection of border areas: Gurung Home Minister Sudhan Gurung

KATHMANDU: Minister for Home Affairs Sudhan Gurung has said that preparations are underway to establish a special monitoring mechanism for regular monitoring and inspection of the border areas.

Speaking at a meeting of the Federalism Enablement and National Concerns Committee of the National Assembly on Friday, Minister Gurung said he had already visited various border areas and identified the problems there. He said preparations were now underway to establish a special monitoring mechanism for regular monitoring and inspection.

“Representatives in plain clothes will now be deployed to regularly monitor whether work at border checkpoints is being carried out effectively and whether inspections are being conducted properly,” Gurung said. “Police personnel deployed along the border areas are facing difficult conditions, including having to live in temporary shelters, tin-roofed structures and dilapidated buildings, as well as dealing with leaking roofs and working overnight shifts. The government will take necessary steps to resolve these problems.”

Gurung said the open border has created challenges such as criminals fleeing across the border after committing offenses and the smuggling of narcotics. Special monitoring will be carried out to address such issues, he added.

Minister Gurung also said the citizenship-related problems faced by people of Susta were being resolved.

At the meeting, the chiefs of the Nepal Police and Armed Police Force briefed the committee on the activities being carried out in the border areas, as well as the problems and challenges they face.

Speaking on the occasion, members of the committee drew the government’s attention to the need to address the problems that Nepali citizens are facing at border checkpoints.
