KATHMANDU: Preparations are underway to stop the movement of vehicles on the Narayanghat-Muglin Road at Tuin Khola for certain hours a day to allow workers to remove a dangerous rock slope.
The Division Road Office, Chitwan, has asked the contractor hired for landslide control works to prepare for cutting the slope by stopping traffic on the road.
Officials estimate that the dangerous slope can be removed in around two months if traffic is halted for two to three hours every day. As traffic volume is lower during the daytime, the office plans to ask the local administration to arrange road closures during that period, officials said.
Around 10,000 vehicles travel along this road section every day.
Babari Construction has signed a contract worth Rs 222.1 million to mitigate landslide risks at the slope on the Narayanghat side of Tuin Khola and at a slope on the Muglin side at Namsi. The contractor is required to complete work at both locations within 10 months.
In the first phase, workers will have to be suspended from the slope and use jackhammers to remove the dangerous sections of the slope. The slope will then be stabilized by drilling rods into the rock face and installing wire mesh from the outside to prevent landslides. The same method will be used at both locations, officials said.
As many as 43 locations along the road section face moderate to high landslide risks.
