KATHMANDU: The Armed Police Force (APF) Nepal has seized 774 electric vehicles (EVs) that entered the country through the Korala border point in Mustang on suspicion of evading customs duty.
The vehicles were taken into control during coordinated operations conducted overnight in Jomsom of Mustang, Kushma of Parbat district, and in Hemja of Kaski district, according to APF Nepal Spokesperson DIG Bishnu Prasad Bhatta.
Security personnel from APF Nepal units in Mustang, Myagdi, Parbat and Kaski were mobilized for the operation.
“The vehicles imported from China were seized following suspicions that customs procedures had been bypassed,” Bhatta said in a statement.
In a separate operation, the APF also seized two electric vehicles from the Pasang Lhamu Highway in Nuwakot, imported from China through the Rasuwagadhi border.
While APF Nepal has not disclosed the manufacturers of the vehicles, the importing company or the estimated value of the seized vehicles, BYD Atto 2 cars can be seen in the picture released by the authorities.
The APF Nepal said all vehicles taken into custody will be handed over to the relevant authorities for further investigation and necessary legal action.
The seizure is one of the largest actions involving electric vehicles in recent years and comes amid EV adoption in the country.
