Janamat officially withdraws support from Madhesh govt

KATHMANDU: Janamat Party has withdrawn its support from the Madhesh Province government, the Office of the Province Chief said in a statement on Wednesday.

“It is notified that a letter has been received stating that the Janamat Party has withdrawn its support to the Madhesh Province Government formed under Article 168 (2) of the Constitution of Nepal, 2015, with effect from May 5,” the statement said.

Chandan Kumar Singh, Janamath’s chief whip in the provincial assembly, had submitted a letter to the Office of Province Chief on Monday night, stating that the party was withdrawing support from the government.

However, Mahesh Prasad Yadav, parliamentary party leader of Janamat Party and also the province’s Minister for Finance, sent another letter to the Office of the Province Chief on Tuesday, stating that the party’s support to the government remained intact.

While the Office of the Provincial Chief was seeking legal advice on whether the letter sent by the parliamentary party leader or the chief whip should be considered valid, the Janamat Party changed its parliamentary party leader.

A meeting of Janamat’s parliamentary party on Tuesday appointed Singh as the new parliamentary leader. Nine out of 12 provincial assembly members of the party were present in the meeting.

Along with Singh, Anita Kumari Sah, Sakil Ans, Hasina Khatun, Tribhuvan Sah, Ranjoo Khang, Bhagyashree Kumari Chaudhary, Sanjay Kumar Yadav, and Shambhu Kumar Sah attended the meeting.

After Janammat removed Minister Yadav as its parliamentary party leader, the Office of Province Chief formally acknowledged that the party had withdrawn its support from the government.

Krishna Prasad Yadav of Nepali Congress was appointed Chief Minister on December 5 last year with the support of 77 lawmakers from six parties—Nepali Congress, JSP Nepal, Janamat Party, CPN (Maoist Centre), LSP Nepal, and CPN (Unified Socialist).
