Rain-bearing system moving eastward: DoHM

KATHMANDU: The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DoHM) has said that a weather system bringing heavy rain along with strong winds is now moving eastward.

The system has already begun causing rainfall in most parts of Kathmandu Valley, as well as Bagmati and Madhesh provinces.

According to the DoHM, moderate rain accompanied by gusty winds and lightning is currently occurring in various districts of Karnali and Lumbini provinces.

Meteorologist Sanjeev Adhikari said the rain-bearing system is gradually shifting east. “The system that originated in Sudurpashchim Province has already spread through Lumbini to Bagmati and Madhesh provinces. Wind speeds could reach up to around 40 km per hour, and their effects may last for about two hours in some places,” he added.

Heavy rainfall is likely on Monday, with precipitation expected to ease somewhat after the evening. However, the DoHM said the system is likely to remain active throughout the week.

According to DoHM, Nepal is under the combined influence of westerly winds, local winds, and a low-pressure area in the lower atmosphere near the eastern region. Additionally, a low-pressure trough extending from east to west across the southern part of the country is affecting the weather.

Sudurpashchim Province is currently experiencing overcast conditions, while Koshi and Karnali provinces, along with the western parts of Lumbini and the Himalayan region, are seeing partly cloudy skies. Some hilly and Tarai areas across the country are also experiencing partial cloud cover, while moderate rain with thunder and lightning is occurring in some places in Sudurpashchim.

On Tuesday, moderate rainfall is likely in some areas of Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini provinces, while a few places in other provinces may also receive rain.

Similarly, on Wednesday, Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini provinces, as well as hilly and mountainous regions of other provinces, are likely to remain cloudy. Some areas in these regions may witness moderate rainfall with thunder and lightning, while light rain is possible in a few places in the Tarai.
