NMC warns doctors against prescribing medication through social media

KATHMANDU: The Nepal Medical Council (NMC) has warned health practitioners against prescribing medication through social media platforms.

Issuing an urgent notice on Friday, the NMC directed all medical practitioners to immediately stop prescribing medicines without directly examining patients and to refrain from breaching patient confidentiality.

“Recommending medication without examination through social media platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook is irresponsible and unscientific. Such activities pose serious risks to patients’ health,” the statement issued by NMC Registrar Dr Satish Kumar Dev said.

The NMC, the regulatory body overseeing medical education in Nepal, also sets and enforces ethical practices in healthcare.

In the notice, the Council has instructed doctors to strictly adhere to professional ethics in the sensitive field of healthcare.

The NMC has warned that doctors who violate these directives will face strict action as per the Nepal Medical Council Act and prevailing laws.
