SSP’s Rubi Kumari certain to be elected Deputy Speaker

KATHMANDU: Rubi Kumari Thakur is certain to be elected Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives after the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), which holds a near two-thirds majority in Parliament, decided to back her candidacy.

RSP Spokesperson Manish Jha said his party has decided to support Thakur for Deputy Speaker. “Our lawmaker Ashok Kumar Chaudhary will be a seconder of her nomination proposal,” Jha said.

RSP has 182 members in the 275-member lower house, while SSP has seven.

Thakur, a proportional representation (PR) lawmaker from the party, registered her nomination on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) has decided to field Saraswati Lama, another PR lawmaker, as its candidate. She has also filed her nominations.

Dol Prasad Aryal of RSP was unanimously elected Speaker on Sunday. Since the Speaker and Deputy Speaker must be from different political parties and genders as per the constitution, RSP cannot field its candidates in the election.
