Election for Deputy Speaker scheduled for Friday

KATHMANDU: Speaker Dol Prasad Aryal has scheduled the election for the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives for Friday.

During the meeting of the House of Representatives on Wednesday, Speaker Aryal said the voting to elect the Deputy Speaker will be held on Friday as per Rule 8 of the House of Representatives Rules, 2022.

According to the Constitution of Nepal, 20154, the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker must be from different political parties and genders. Since Speaker Dol Praad Aryal was elected from the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), which commands a near two-thirds majority in the lower house, the party cannot field its candidate for Deputy Speaker.

Therefore, the Nepali Communist Party (NCP), Shram Sanskriti Party (SSP), and Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) have all staked claims for the position.
