Govt decides to call House session on April 2

KATHMANDU: The government has decided to recommend to President Ram Chandra Paudel to convene a session of the federal parliament on April 2.

A cabinet meeting held on Monday took the decision, according to government Spokesperson and Minister for Education, Science and Technology Sashmit Pokharel.

During Prime Minister Balendra Shah’s meeting with lawmakers from Koshi and Karnali Province, some lawmakers had urged the government to convene a session of the federal parliament.

According to Article 91(1) of the Constitution of Nepal, 2015, the House of Representatives should elect a Speaker and Deputy Speaker within 15 days of the convening of the first meeting. The first meeting of the new House of Representatives convened on March 26.

The meeting also decided to form a task force to prepare a discussion paper on constitutional amendment. The task force will include representatives from political parties represented in Parliament, according to Pokharel.

“The task force will be formed under the leadership of the Prime Minister’s political advisor, with representation from all parliamentary parties, to prepare a discussion paper on constitutional amendment,” Pokharel said.
