Karki commission not formed for impartial investigation: Pokharel Shankar Pokharel

KATHMANDU: CPN-UML General Secretary Shankar Pokhrel has said that the high-level commission formed to investigate the incidents of September 8 and 9, 2025, was not formed for an impartial investigation.

A day after Prime Minister Sushila Karki decided to make the commission’s report, led by former judge Gauri Bahadur Karki, public, following its leak to media outlets before its official release, Pokharel said the commission’s own report confirms that it was not established to conduct an unbiased inquiry.

Writing a post on his social media page, Pokharel said the commission and the 2026 general election were attempts to give political and legal legitimacy to the impact of algorithms on Nepali society. He added that both the election results and the commission’s report reflect this purpose.

The report has recommended action against then-Prime Minister and CPN-UML Chairperson KP Sharma Oli, then-Home Secretary Ramesh Lekhak, and then-IG of Nepal Police Indra Kuber Khapung and several other government officials.

Pokharel cautioned that the road ahead may not be easy, and both the nation and democracy will have to face challenges for some time.

“Populism, anarchism, and opportunism are neither solutions to today’s challenges nor long-term options for ideological politics,” he added.
