KATHMANDU: The Election Commission (EC) has distributed certificates to 110 lawmakers elected under the proportional representation (PR) system in the House of Representatives elections held on March 5.
Amid a ceremony organized on the EC premises in Kathmandu on Thursday, Acting Chief Election Commissioner Ram Prasad Bhandari and Commissioners Dr Janaki Kumari Tuladhar and Sagun Shumsher Rana welcomed the newly elected members.
Krishna Bahadur Raut, the secretary of the EC and the election officer for the PR system, handed over the certificates to 110 lawmakers.
Speaking on the occasion, Acting Chief Election Commissioner Bhandari expressed confidence that the new House of Representatives would work seriously to reform the electoral system in line with the Constitution. He said new laws should be introduced to address issues related to the local government and the provincial assembly elections scheduled for 2028. He also said holding provincial and local elections simultaneously would be cost-effective.
Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) won 57 out of 110 seats, while the Nepali Congress (NC) came second with 20 seats. Similarly, NC won CPN-UML 16, the Nepali Communist Party (NCP) nine, and the Shram Sanskriti Party (SSP) and the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) secured four seats each.
