EC finalizes PR seats; RSP gets 57 out of 100 seats

KATHMANDU: The Election Commission (EC) has finalized the allotment of seats under the proportional representation system to six political parties that met the three percent threshold.

Issuing a statement on Thursday, the EC said it finalized the seats under the PR system as per Section 60(2) of the House of Representatives Member Election Act, 2017, based on the total number of votes received by the parties.

Out of nearly five dozen parties that participated in the election under the PR system, only the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), Nepali Congress (NC), CPN-UML, Nepali Communist Party (NCP), Shram Sanskriti Party (SSP), and Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) secured the minimum of 3% of total valid votes.

According to EC, RSP has been allotted 57 seats, NC 20 seats, UML 16 seats, NCP nine seats, and SSP and RPP four seats each.

With this, the total number of seats secured by the RSP, which swept the first-past-the-post (FPTP) voting by winning 125 seats, has reached 182 in the 275-member House of Representatives. This meant the party fell two seats short of a two-thirds majority.

Similarly, the NC, which won 18 FPTP seats, will have 38 seats. Similarly, UML, NCP, SSP, and RPP will have 25, 18, seven, and five seats, respectively.

Independent candidate, Mahabir Pun, won one FPTP seat.
