KATHMANDU: Two former deputy Prime Ministers lost their election deposits in the Kathmandu-5 seat of the House of Representatives in the election held on Thursday.

According to the final counting results published by the Election Commission, Former Deputy Prime Minister and senior leader of the CPN-UML, and former Deputy Prime Minister and senior leader of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party Kamal Thapa forfeited their deposits after failing to secure 10% of the total votes cast in the constituency.

Pokharel finished third with 4,701 votes, while Thapa secured only 1,922 votes.

Sashmit Pokharel of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) was elected from the constituency securing 30,737 votes, while Pradeep Paudel of Nepali Congress came second with 9,159 votes.

A total of 49,991 votes were cast in Kathmandu-5.

As per Section 71(1) of the House of Representatives Member Election Act, 2017, a candidate who fails to secure at least 10% of the total valid votes forfeits the deposit amount submitted during candidacy. All candidates contesting the election are required to submit a deposit of Rs 10,000 as a security deposit.
