KATHMANDU: The death toll from a bus accident carrying wedding guests in Baitadi has risen to 13.
According to District Police Ofice, Baitadi, the bus was returning with wedding guests from Bhauni of Purchaudi Municipality–7 when it met with an accident on Thursday evening near Badhgaun turn in the same ward. The bus plunged about 200 meters off the road and was completely wrecked.
It was headed to Sunkuda of Bajhang.
Police say eight died on Thursday itself. The death toll rose to 13 after five more injured succumbed to their injuries during treatment at Dadeldhura Hospital, according to Inspector Baldev Badu, the information officer at the District Police Office, Baitadi. “Twenty-five injured passengers are receiving treatment at Dadeldhura Hospital, while four others are being treated at Deulek Health Post in Bajhang. Five of the injured have been referred to Dhangadhi for further treatment,” Badu added.
Police have taken the bus driver, Birendra Budha, into custody and are investigating the incident.
The bride and groom, who were traveling in a separate vehicle, are safe.
