EC removes 76 candidates from PR lists submitted by parties

KATHMANDU: The Election Commission (EC) has removed the names of 56 candidates from the proportional representation (PR) closed lists submitted by political parties for the House of Representatives elections scheduled for March 5.

Issuing a press release on Monday, the EC said the decision was taken after reviewing provisions related to qualifications and disqualifications of candidates, past decisions made on various dates, and details submitted by political parties.

According to the EC, 21 candidates were removed after being found on the blacklist of the Credit Information Bureau. Similarly, another 25 were disqualified because their names were also included in the closed lists for the provincial assembly elections under the PR system.

Likewise, 10 candidates were removed from the list for failing to pay fines imposed by the EC, while four were disqualified for not meeting the minimum age requirement of 25 years. One candidate was disqualified the name was not in the voters’ list, and two others were found to be registered in areas not covered by their respective voter registration details.

The EC also removed one candidate after a political party submitted a male candidate in place of a required female candidate, while 10 others were removed at the request of the concerned political parties.
