KATHMANDU: The government has expressed its gratitude to the government of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for granting amnesty to 267 Nepali prisoners on the occasion of the UAE’s 54th National Day (Eid Al Etihad).

Issuing a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it views the amnesty as a symbol of the friendship, goodwill, and cordial relations between Nepal and the UAE. It also praised the UAE government for its friendly and humanitarian gesture.

According to the statement, the decision to grant the amnesty was made in response to repeated requests made by the Embassy of Nepal in Abu Dhabi, in line with directives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“Nepali citizens, who have received the pardon, will be able to return home after completing the required legal procedures under UAE law, provided there are no other pending legal cases or restrictions against them,” the ministry added in the statement.

Earlier in March last year, the UAE government granted amnesty to 166 Nepalis imprisoned in various jails on the occasion of Eid al-Fitr festival.
